Dropping the Ball
I’m torn. I was there at the beginning. Android was nothing more than the lowly underdog and now it is a raging behemoth. I loved the G1. Each device there after, the Slide and then the G2, had the hardware keyboards and the Android OS I wanted. The G2, aside from all its quirks and small inconsistencies, was the phone I wanted when I wanted it. I’ve finally come to accept the loss of my keyboard and plan to move on from it. So began my yearning for the next mobile device.
I so hoped the new iPhone would come with a body redesign and slightly larger screen. After the G2, I felt the iPhone 4 body design lacking. I was sorely disappointed at the announcement of the 4S and was unimpressed. They had upgraded everything, but the two major cons I had with the 4. A couple weeks later, a phone with both came forward.
The Galaxy Nexus was everything, on paper, that I had hoped for. I had half decided it would be my next phone. I was already switching carriers and Google/Samsung said it would be here in November. I’m switching my plan at the end of the month. Not a day after or a week after. At the end of the month I am switching.
Previous rumors pointed to a Thanksgiving/Black Friday release. Now the ‘rumor mill’, fueled by a photo posted to Twitter say Dec. 8th. This is unacceptable. Unless something happens next week, I think my love affair with Android is over.
Google, you have most likely built a mobile OS that will finally rival iOS. Samsung’s body design looks beautiful. Verizon’s LTE deployment is coming along nicely. That being said, YOU HAVE ALL DROPPED THE BALL! You are idiots for announcing a product and not releasing it in your largest market first. How the hell does the UK get the damn thing first? Maybe it is a carrier problem, but you are no less to blame, Google and Samsung. Google, Verizon, & Samsung have lost my sale.
I may not have much power, but I do have my hard earned money. Unless a miracle happens, I’ll be purchasing an iPhone 4S from AT&T a week from today. Who knows, you might surprise me Verizon… but I very much doubt it.
